If you are in Rio de Janeiro this weekend, don’t miss out this Saturday on the Feira Rio Antigo, or the "Old Rio Fair". This open-air market that receives from 15,000 to 20,000 visitors, is held every first Saturday of the month. There you can find it all in one place: antiques, arts and crafts, vinyls, vintage clothing, great bars and restaurants, and live music, from choro and samba.
It´s in the heart of old Rio, Rua Lavradio, in 1770 the first residential street of Rio de Janeiro, according to local history. Brazilian personalities like Carmen Miranda, actor João Caetano, and Madame Sata (Madam Satan), original drag queen and gangster, would roam around this street. Another illustrious visitor was the locally well known journalist João do Rio, who wrote stories about the past of the neighborhood, its cabarets and entertainment houses. Part of the old houses from the historical past are still there, giving a bohemian feel to the area.
In Lavradio street you’ll also find the samba club Rio Scenarium, an all time favorite for a good night out. It´s probably the best-known club in the neighborhood of Lapa, a spacious venue with 3 floors. Its vintage décor, full with antiques, attracts not only foreigners, but as well loads of locals, looking for good samba and other music and to party until early in the morning.
Location: Lavradio Street, near the Arcos da Lapa. From 10hrs till 18hrs.
