New bike lanes around Bay of Guanabara

01/12/2014. Biking in Rio de Janeiro, and specifically around the Bay of Guanabara in the beautiful South Zone of the city, where are Urban Bike tour passes by, will be more fun and secure with the two new bike lanes that Rio de Janeiro is constructing. The deadline to finish the new lanes is planned for next month. "The revitalization of the route of this bike lane in Botafogo is necessary, because is it is an important connection between the center and the south of the city. It will help to make the bicycle to be a more sustainable transportation alternative, creating a better and safer route", explained the municipal secretary of the Environment, Altamirando Moraes.

The new section will allow cyclists to move within five meters of the Bay of Guanabara, with total security. Today, the bike lane passes in front of the Yacht Club Botafogo, with the cars next to the lane. With the new additions to the bike infrastructure biking in Rio de Janeiro will give more views to the natural beauty of the city, with great views of the Bay and the Sugar Loaf. With the route the city hopes to achieve a better integration with the Bike Rio system - the orange city rental bikes -, the subway and the bus system. The bike has to become a important alternative for transportation to avoid the huge traffic jams.

In four years biking in Rio de Janeiro has become more and more popular. This government has created a lot of extra infrastructure, from from 150 kilometers in 2009 to a current 370 kilometer. The goal is to reach almost 500 kilometer around the Olympic Games in 2016.
