About Rio by Bike Tours

The company was founded by Philip de Wit and Jan Willem Zeldenrust, two Dutch locals and journalists with a passion for biking and for telling stories about Rio.

Philip arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 2008, after living three-and-half-a-years in New Delhi where he worked as a South Asia correspondent, covering countries like India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. After that he worked five years as a Brazil and Latin America correspondent. Nowadays, when he is not guiding bike tours in Rio de Janeiro, he works as a contributing writer for sport sites.

Jan Willem first set foot on the shores of Guanabara Bay in Rio in 2011, after a three year stint in Barcelona. In this Spanish metropolis he worked as a bike tour guidesportswriter and photographer. In Brazil, besides being a tour guide, he also works as a Brazil correspondent for a Dutch Press Agency, writing about sportsculture and travel.

Rio by Bike is also a partner of the international network of bike tour operators Cycle Cities. In 2017 we expanded the company to São Paulo, because biking in Saõ Paulo is also lots of fun. Check out the website of São Paulo by Bike

about us

We had an enjoyable bike ride around the city with a great guide. Stopped often for pictures and to share interesting facts about the city. No hills, all flat, super easy ride, lots of fun!

Easily one of the best things I did on vacation. The tour guide was so full of information and interesting tit-bits about all things Rio. The pace was nice, not too fast with lots of stops.

This tour checked more boxes than I could count. It was an eco friendly choice certainly, but I am sure I discovered far more than I would have done in a conventional bus tour.
